December-28-2013I was able to take my first jog today. I expected to get a little bit in, and then have my legs give out and I would just walk. I ended up jogging a lot more than I expected, then walking the steps up to the train station (Last time I took those steps I had to stop for a rest afterwards). I was fortunate to have Adrienne with me, who is a top notch personal trainer in NY. She was taking my pulse each time I stopped. My standing pulse is about 90. The first time I took a pulse I was at 140bmp. I figured to walk a while. But after I came down the escalator, I had to keep running. My body just wanted to move. So I ran. At the next break I was 150. I stopped for a little bit, walking slowly, my legs were wobbly.
I stopped to rest, looking for a place to sit that was high. Adrienne said that I should keep moving so I don’t pool blood in my legs. So I started walking back.
Why walk when you can run? I started running again, shuffling at first and then when I got to the old church hospital thing I grabbed Adrienne and just said “Don’t let me fall!” and I put in my best power sprint that I could. She stayed right next to me as I tore towards the building. Lucky for her she had a track scholarship at FSU, as I was probably going at a speed that would challenge the average sedentary human being. I was moving. Adrienne checked me again, 160. I can stop now. Yeah, I got a little wet with tears. This was however the first time I was able to get wet with sweat too. I felt the workout burn. I knew I would feel it in my legs the next day. I flexed my legs so I could see the quad muscles. Not a muscle in sight. Not at this time. Next time maybe. Then I got the biggest treat ever, a full hour of being stretched while laying out under the setting evening clouds. I’m happy. Thank you life. Every day gets better, and this isn’t a brag, merely an observation.
Then as quickly as she arrived, she was back on the plane to NY. Did I mention that I’m the luckiest guy in the world?
