12/10/13 – 11:20AM Victory

It’s not yet 11AM, and while I usually write these things in the wee hours, there’s nothing that says I have to. Last night I slept. 3 times actually. Not “I fell asleep” but I got into bed and slept. It wasn’t as long as I make it sound. From 11 until 12:30AM. Then from about 1 until 3AM. Then again from until 5:30AM. Then I had to wake up.
But it felt great. My Nurse comes in and gives me awesome news. When I arrived at the hospital they are injecting me every 8 hours with this stuff to keep me from getting blood clots. After the first week I was able to get up and move around. The shots kept coming. My friends brought me exercise bands, that I started to use, while in bed. I would attach the bands to the foot of the bed and use them to move my legs, arms, etc. No particular routine, just movement.
The shots were initially going into my stomach. They have to go into the fatty part of your body. Then I had them move to my arm, as the stomach ones were making it difficult for me to sit up, or cough, so they could get sputum. So they moved to the arms.
Getting shots in alternate arms every 8 hours can be really annoying.
I asked the doctors if it was OK for me to move my workout to the floor with my pilates mat.
“Well, don’t do it alone, someone has to help you up.”
Uh..yeah, of course.I moved it to the floor. Every morning at 7:15AM a doctor would pass by and check on me, and I was wrapping up my workout. Again, nothing particular, sometimes I would start at 5am, and just stretch, hook up the bands, nothing intense. Doctors and nurses were commenting.
“He does it every day.”
“He really likes to exercise”
“I should be doing the same thing”
And I’m still getting these shots designed for bed-confined people. They decide to switch it to every 12 hours. Small victory.
Now that I’m in a new area, and have time to go outside and workout I have been pushing it more, every morning at 9am I do a workout. Every afternoon I do a balance and stretch.
Yet I’m still getting these shots every 12 hours. My blood sugar is tested every few hours and they run into a problem.
When they prick my finger blood is spurting out and pouring down my hand. I tell them continuously that I probably don’t need those anti-clot shots.
Today I am officially off of the shot. Big Victory. Cheesy Grin 🙂
